So I just finished reading an article in one of Alex's GameInformer's all about the upcoming Star Trek MMO. I was initially very skeptical about how such a thing could possibly work, but I'm pretty sold on it now. Of course, only an actual release and a bit of playing will confirm that it's a good game, but it seems like the ducks are in the proverbial row thus far.
Here's some of the interesting points:
- It takes place 30 years after Nemesis, so all new universe, basically.
- It starts off as Federation vs. Klingons, as the Khitomer accords have broken down. Both factions are playable. (Romulan, Cardassian, and maybe Dominion are considered for expansion).
- Playable races include Human, Klingon, Orion, Nausican, Vulcan, Andorian, Bajoran, Gorn, Orion, Ferengi, and Tellarite - or you can CREATE YOUR OWN RACE, with enough customization to concievably create any Trek race you've seen over the years, or just make a new one!
- The size/power of the ship you command depends on your advancement within the game.
- Each player gets a ship, and the captain is their primary avatar. The senior officers are each captains "pets", and developing their skillsets is part of the MMO appeal.
- Ships are almost entirely customizable, even down to the inside decor!
- The Neutral zone is PvP, and sectors will change hands as different factions make different plays.
- Random world generator (akin to spore) will make for tons of planets to explore, in great variety.
- "Quests" will take about an hour each, and feature blends of combat/diplomacy/science/exploration very similar to the layout of an actual episode. Groups can be formed, both for space scenarios and away missions!
- "Guilds" are actually fleets of ships, who can go in together to construct starbases, which allows for construction of the biggest capital ships.
- Random Borg encounters...EPIXRAIDBOSSESLOLZ
So I'm actually looking forward to it. I'm totally going to create my own race, probably Federation (cause I never cared for Klingons), but I'll probably play whatever S1 does. Captain Bognosterfum of the USS Ravage reports! |

Sounds interesting, I will be willing to give it a month. _________________ "Never fear, I is here!"

I am TOTALLY excited about the playable races and customization feature and the QUESTING sounds really cool... can't wait to see how it actually works.

Well, I'm sold. If a good group of us does it or S1 does it, I'll join either side. I'll probably be Andorian. I love those silly antenni.
Sounds very unique to MMO land but still true to form for Trek verse. _________________

Just because it is the only thing I can compare it to, and I just wanna get this straight. Is it like Alliance v Horde in WoW where there are x races for each side? If this is true it does sound nice.
Ships being totally customizable sounds great. Hydros and a bumping sound system for mine plz _________________ Why run? You'll only die tired.

Sounds like the answer to your question is "yes" Brian. However, you could easily construct yourself a Klingon to join the Federation by using the race creator. Of course, knowing the Trek universe, they could opt to make factions not race-specific, like SWG was.
Personally, though, I think racial divides aren't really a bad thing.
What I REALLY hope is that, as Federation, you can't make ships that look like Klingon ships and vice-versa. I'm totally down with character swapping, but Federation ships should always have that distinct "Federationey" look. |

Incredible..... if this info is indeed correct, this game is gonna be sweet.
LOL.... after this game comes out and we all get up to speed, we'll have to do like Jared does in WoW by running several ships at once .... we could take-over 1/2 the Neutral Zone in one night!!!! MUAHAHAHAHAHAAA!!!!

I really REALLY hope S1 plays as Federation, though I doubt this will be the case. For some reason, I really want to play the good guys this time around.
...until the Romulans are released, of course, then IT'S ON. |

I think I'm done playing with Section One. They are too hard-core these days. I watched the Warhammer boards when that game came out -- a BUNCH of them bought the game, grinded their characters to max level in a few days, and then when they got tired of fighting the same people in PVP, they started dropping like flies. I think they only have a very small core group playing it right now, from what I can tell. For people like me who don't grindgrindgrind, there is very little support from the rest of the guild. They will talk to you about what to do if you have questions, but rarely do they come and team up with you, even if they have alts at your level.
The same thing happened with Age of Conan. AoC was supposed to be the next long-term game for them, even moreso than SWG. Instead, the entire guild was gone within two months, partly because the game was incomplete & unbalanced, and mostly because they burned themselves out doing the same stuff over & over.
When we all make our own guild, it's more fun. We don't grind like madmen to get to the highest level, which makes the game more fun along the way.
And no, they probaby won't play Federation... which is another reason I won't be joining them _________________

Well, us forming our own guild is great, assuming we have enough people to actually do the group oriented stuff. Mortal Coil was awesome, because the entire group was in, and we recruited a few great new people like Scott, Cas, Cassie, Allarana, etc.
If at least a good handful of us play, then I'm game for trying a ZAN fleet for sure, but we'll need enough peeps to make it worthwhile! |

If enough of us do, we can get Daniel & Blanco & just some other peeps we all know to try & play. We'd probably have enough.
As of now, we don't know how many it takes to do guild activities, so we'll have to wait for that info.
I, too, am down with the Federation. I wanna play an Andorian race so that y'all might stand in awe of my teni!
Also, I HIGHLY recommend the "Path to 2409" they are writing up. Its taking events from the end of Nemisis until the start of the game, 30 years later & letting us all know what's happened. Its a good read. _________________

Indeed.
I would rather be federation than Klingon myself, so it sounds like we're all on the same page with that at least.
I do hope they add more factions than just those two over time though; the federation vs. klingon empire has been done and done and done and... _________________
