I still think I'll make it through '08 without touching an MMO, however, I just saw a commercial during Atlantis for Stargate Worlds. After attempting to visit the official website (undoubtedly totally farked by people like me), I settled for info on the wiki. It's actually happening!

Also, I was leafing through one of Alex's Game Informer magazines over Christmas, and it contained a kind of teaser article on the Star Trek MMO (speaking solely about sound design). It wasn't much, but it was there.

Moral of the story...awesome. I will be willing to try both of these for a month (until the usual MMO suckage sets in). I doubt either will be out in time to put my New Year's resolution to the test, though.

I saw the commercial for Stargate Worlds and I geeked out for it... that looked amazing!

As for the Star Trek MMO, it is also happening. Perceptual released the first in-game shot of STO in early December:

CLICKY (Click on pic at bottom to enlarge)

Looks pretty good to me. Hopefully the game engine will be too... STO is scheduled to release sometime in 2009, but we know how that story goes. It'll be worth the wait as long as they get it right.

Other than the little bit of January '07 when I still played WOW and a couple hours of SWG here and there during the fall, I stayed out of MMOs too. There doesn't look to be anything good coming out this year, either... Warhammer = BLEH and the Pirates MMO seems like a throwaway.

if you crave MMO style of game play without the grinding, then try Hellgate...tis good. Plus, you can get stuff done and put it down & not have to log many hours every day. Its great.

More MMOs? Will the madness ever end?

I would be willing to try the star trek one, though nearly always star trek games suck. You never know though, this could be the one.

Ask and ye shall receive... (hopefully these links still work.. if not I'm sure I have it backed up somewhere)

LINKY

Altho you might want to fish out an OOLLLD Mac to run it on... remember it was never optimized for Power Mac processors, so it ran at about 2300mph on anything above an '040 processor!!

There is a link on that page for a Windows emulator that will let you run the game in Windows, but it looks pretty old. Dunno if it will still work or not.

Once I start setting up my "collection" I'm definitely putting Rescue on them ALL! Razz

Apparently Todd also never played Star Trek TNG for Gameboy.

I know he has played Bridge Commander (granted, only good in multiplayer) and Armada II (because we've destroyed the universe many times in Armada I).

I agree though, Star Trek, more than any other franchise, has incredible suckage potential. It's all because nobody understands how to produce it correctly, since it's much less about combat than diplomacy. Really, Trek would probably be better done as a SimCity type of game.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!

Rescue SO TOTALLY RULED!!!! Probably THE best early Trek game EVAR made!!! FTW!!!!!!!!!!!! I may try putting that emulator on my old 1000MHz laptop - - but I bet it will still go way too fast to ever time the phaser cannon trick properly.

Yes, Ravage is correct: Trek DOES have mass-suckage potential, if not done right.... This new one had better be set-up correctly, or else the Trek Faithful shall lead a mighty revolt against that company, ie- they shall wither and DIE..... or just explode in a large antimatter warhead detonation...... whatever.
