In the last video they talked about boarding parties. I wanna know if you can use a boarding party to completely take over another ship. _________________ Είναι όλα τα ελληνικά σε με

They have also said that each player starts-off with a small ship in whatever class you want to be. Then, as you advance, you get to move up to more powerful ships within each class.... evidently, you start with small, cannon-fodder type ships (ie- Cenataur, Miranda, etc) and you add more weapons, sheilds, sensors, tactical systems, etc, and then you can move up to higher ships, like Soverign and Promethius when you get to be an Admiral. Evidently, the Cruisers can take a lot of damage since they have big crews. I'm not sure why they are implying that escots can't take alot of damage, b/c the Defiant obviously CAN..... maybe the Defiant is one of the "tops" in the escort class. Oh well. At least, that's how I've read it in various dialogs with the game developers. We shall see.
But yes, they really need a comprehensive list of all classes, and their "upgradability" options so we can decide how to set-up our ships. I have also read, in the past, that players can get together and build a starbase, as well. That was a while back, so we'll have to see if that's still included int he game.
Everyone would love to advance to the point of having a Soverign or Promethius, but I'd be willing to play science vessel, since they can do all kinds of crazy stuff.... I'm just not sure if I am "with-it" enough to do the class right.... 'yall know how inept I am at video games! |

If they're SMART, they will play the ship differences in the same way EVE does, while at the same time making some "higher level" than others.
Take this example:
A noob character is given a Miranda class ship to start - it pretty much suxxorz.
That character develops skills in the escort class and settles on getting a Defiant due to it's totally kickass DPS.
With proper gear, the Defiant can hold its own against LOWER GEARED ships of higher class, like a somewhat newbie Galaxy class. A higher level combat ship will always be better, with equal gear, than a Defiant....
...HOWEVER (here's where the brilliance of EVE really kicks in), the Defiant is faster at sub-light, more maneuverable, maybe charges it's batteries faster, maybe has a smaller signature radius and is thus harder to detect with sensors...any number of small advantages. While this Defiant will never best the Sovereign in one-on-one combat, the ship itself will still be VERY viable in group activity, and perhaps have a useful role throughout the characters lifespan. In such a way, you may have several ships you use in different situations. In EVE, for example (again), PvP fleets are composed of a mix of Tanks (big ships/big damage), tacklers (DPS, baby), utility ships (repairs and debuffs, biatch!), and interceptors (in yer face pewpewpewpewpew). The Defiant would be a pewpewpewpew.
Of course, STO may not have this in mind at all, and it could simply be a static scale of "which ship is better, dur", which I would find disappointing, but par for the course with MMO's. |

well, depending on what ships to what. I have been a tank before in MMOs so I might go for that first. _________________ "Never fear, I is here!"

Here is some more info on ships and other stuff:
Game Update on Trek Movie.com
I also found this chart, which is based on information that they have posted on the STO site..... we'll have to see if this is actually how it will be, or if this is just conjecture (you know how the game developers love to change things up)
BIG STO ship chart - conjecture?? |

Interesting that there are classes that seem to be named after ships. The Stargazer was a Constellation-class, the Majestic was a Miranda-class.
Also interesting to note that the graphic for the Constitution-class starship under "Cruisers" is the Constitution hull from the new Trek movie, not the classic Trek movies. I wonder why the Constitutions are in there twice? The old hulls should be LONG retired by the 25th century, and one would think the "1701-A" refit hull would be used since the game is taking place in the alpha universe. _________________

I'd imagine you start basic. That's the way it is in Eve... plus you have to train up skills to get better ships, it looks like, from the insignia on the chart. _________________
